Surf camps in Morocco: Taghazout, Imsouane or Mirleft? The 2026 comparative guide

In the surfing imagination, Taghazout And Imsouane They occupy a special place: one for its vibrant atmosphere and omnipresent schools, the other for its long, photogenic right-hand break that sometimes makes you forget the passing of time.

I want to offer you a different perspective and a different approach. A slightly different way to approach a first surfing trip to Morocco: making Mirleft your base, take advantage of quieter sandy beaches to build solid fundamentals, and keep Taghazout/Imsouane as chosen excursions on days when conditions really align?

The idea is not to pit destinations against each other, but to create a trip where you surf more, with less pressure around you, and where each session has a real intention.

Taghazout & Imsouane: what I love about them… and how I approach them

I love the energy of Taghazout/Tamraght: the easy access to the training beaches, the cafes just steps from the sand, the joyful buzz that motivates you to get up early. However, the perfect surf breaks attract crowds, and sometimes a beginner spends more time waiting than surfing, especially when surf schools are constantly taking over the same sandbars. Imsouane is something else entirely: when the bay breaks at high tide with a moderate swell, the surfing is almost hypnotic, and I understand why people want to experience it at least once; but these days naturally attract a lot of people, and you get the most out of the place with a targeted excursion, chosen for the ideal window of opportunity, rather than basing your entire stay there. Hence my bias: Mirleft as a base camp for more serene surfing, and Taghazout/Imsouane for “signature” moments when the weather gives us a wink.

Quick comparison (2026)

Destination Beginner Crowds Experience Best time My approach
Taghazout / Tamraght Accessible on school beaches Important at the right times Surf vibe, easy logistics Oct–Apr (mornings) I prefer the’excursion when the crowds decrease and the swell is suitable.
Imsouane (The Bay) Very soft in small/medium Raised on perfect days Long, memorable straight Oct–Apr (rising tide) I'm aiming for the ideal window rather than making it the basis of the stay.
Mirleft (base 2026) Ideal (varied sandy beaches) Low to moderate A relaxed pace, regular sessions Oct–Apr (mornings) Base camp to learn, with flexibility in daily choices.

What a week with us is like (simply put)

We start with clear guidelines: safety, reading the water, choosing a sandbar, and first take-offs on a wave that provides good lift without pushing you too hard. Then, we establish a regular rhythm: mostly mornings (often calmer), two sessions if the weather window allows, and the freedom to change spots as the tide changes.

A jumble of questions

Is Taghazout still suitable for beginners?
Yes, the ecosystem is practical and motivating, but favorable time slots attract people; if you want a more relaxed learning experience, a base in Mirleft will often allow you to surf more.
The bay retains its charm when the rising tide meets a moderate swell. I prefer to go on a carefully planned excursion, to take advantage of the best window of opportunity without turning my entire stay into a race against the waves.
Because the space in the line-up, the flexibility of the spots and the serene rhythm promote progression: you repeat, you adjust, you gain confidence, and you come back with real experience.
